![]() ![]() Obi
are the thick sashes that were traditionally worn around the waist of
the kimono. They average about 5in to 13in in width, and 10ft to 12ft in
length. The vast majority (over 90%) of the obi we sell are purchased
for textile use, not for use as sashes. When you really get into obi
textiles, it is easy to see why. Obi textiles are generally more ornate,
and usually much thicker and more textural than kimono textiles. This
makes for some drop-dead gorgeous fabrics, but wearing such a huge heavy
traditional obi is not very practical for everyday use. The obi we sell
are nearly all of the informal variety, such as hakata or nagoya style.
We rarely sell formal obi, such as fukuro or maruobi- when we do, they
are usually over $150.

We
have customers who buy loads of the cheap stuff, we have customers who
rarely touch anything under $100, and then we have the eclectics who
buy everything from the luscious to the bizarre in all price categories.
We have collectors who buy the kimono for clothing, and we have a huge designer clientele, who cut up these kimono and obi for use as ravishing textiles, and then recreate them into wearable art clothing, pillows, screens, chairs, hangings, jewelry, belts, quilts, etc. For those who are coming for the first time, you'll learn very quickly that the textile junkie crowd that we attract are some of the friendliest folks around.

TIPS
for the Serious Textile Junkies 1) Although mesmerized textile junkies have been known to not come up for food or air, there are some who need some munchies. Those who need a small bite might want to bring some munchies in your purse. We don't allow any eating or beverages at the show, but you can grab a nibble right outside. You might wonder why we talk about food on a textile website. Most of our customers stay for hours, and then starve, thats why! 2) Some people bring a friend or spouse to help them collect and hold their selections. To the surprise of the rest of us, even the husbands all seem to have a jolly good time. Most customers come alone, because they do not want to be interrupted in their heavenly tactile pursuits. 3) For those who like to bring a suitcase with wheels, we will gladly check it at the bag-check counter for you until you are ready to leave. 4) The really sharp textile junkies realize that goodies are available at all hours, because other customers are constantly moving stuff and returning stuff to the racks all day long. This requires a few strolls around the room at different time periods. The kimono connoisseurs know that sometimes the kimono lining is more valuable than the outer fabric, and these treasures are usually discovered by accident, just a sliver peeping out from a rack that nobody saw.
