Wait until you see our luminous selection of wedding kimono! It is definitely off the richter scale. We got everything from the common to the heirloom rarity. The supply of various colors in vintage kimono differs tremendously from the color supply of vintage wedding kimono (uchikake). The color assortment is very wide in regular kimono and severely limited in wedding kimono. You can find just about every color in the rainbow in regular kimono and obi, but your color choices in wedding kimono are very tiny. We get a constant stream of customers who come in looking for a mauve, celadon, or lavender uchikake to match their sofa or carpet. They have no idea that they have just asked for the nearly impossible. These colors can be found in our other categories, but rarely ever in wedding kimono. It is interesting to note that black kimono is the most common color for regular kimono, but excruciatingly rare for wedding kimono. Many kimono dealers in Japan have wedding kimono in whites and reds/oranges (the second most common color) only. Less than 1% of all wedding kimono are of deep rich colors such as purple, blue, black, teal, or burgundy. Prices reflect these ratios- if it is easier to find a hundred white wedding kimono than it is to find one purple one, you can bet that the price difference will be huge. The person that bought our hand dyed purple uchikake that was dripping with opulent gold embroidery at our past show knew exactly what she had- and what a rare prize it was! Other factors such as embellishment (embroidery, painting, dyeing, and applique) techniques, & weaving techniques affect prices tremendously. Although not common, it is possible for a rare white kimono that is covered with unusual embroidery to be worth more than a deep blue kimono of inferior quality. Color is not the only factor in determining the cost of a kimono. Some wedding kimono have as many as four or five embellishment techniques, and are definitely the ultimate in opulence. Although most of our wedding kimono are sold to folks who are hanging them in their home as art masterworks, we have sold them to people that wear them around the house. Needless to say, they must lead very eccentric lives! All
items are one of a kind, and may have been previously sold. |
